• This week's hospitality news has shown two shining examples of what an amazing journey an innovative new brand can go on, with the right people on board and a bit of luck!
Mama Shelter, the hip boutique brand founded by the Trigano family (of Club Med fame) prided itself on being a cutting edge brand, offering a combination of Philippe Starck design and affordable prices.
The brand was well liked and admired, and was expanding at a steady rate, when in late 2014, Accor stepped in, buying a 35 per cent stake in the company and putting it on the fast track. Since then new properties have opened in Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro and Prague. And now it has announced it will be making its debut in Dubai in 2020.
This is a significant demonstration, not only of Accor's ambition for Mama Shelter, but also of how the hotel scene in Dubai is changing - with numerous alternatives to the traditional fare of large luxury properties appearing on the scene.
Another innovative brand, CitizenM, has taken a step forward in its plans with the appointment of a real big hitter, Frits van Paasschen, to its advisory board. The former Starwood CEO is known for his progressive ideas and should be an idea fit as CitizenM rapidly moves in to the mainstream.
The 2017 Boutique and Lifestyle Hotel Summit, taking place in London on May 22nd and 23rd, will feature a number of sessions on the changing nature of this niche of the hospitality sector. Click here to see the agenda, and book your tickets here.
