• Heartening news from the US, where Expedia's Independents Day report, published today, has shown a thriving independent hotel scene, where performance levels are reportedly exceeding those of branded properties.
Responding to data from STR which revealed that 'unbranded' properties had greater overall average daily rate (ADR) and revenue per available room (RevPAR) than their branded hotel counterparts, Expedia's study found that Independent properties not only averaged higher ADRs than branded properties, but the ADR growth for independents has also doubled the pace of branded ADRs since Q1 2014".
Major cities such as Las Vegas, Manhattan, Miami, Orlando and Los Angeles are among the best performing markets for the independents, but thee are spectacular hot spots around the country including Kauai (Hawaii), Charlottesville (Virginia), and Prescott (Arizona).
The report goes on to detail how effective independents are at attracting overseas, visitors, maximising bookings from mobile traffic and standing out from the crowd.
It would be interesting to see a similar study looking at other markets - Europe, and APAC for example, where the percentage of branded properties as part of the total hotel stock is significantly lower than that in the US, but there are positives to be taken from the study for everybody in the independent sector globally.
