| | | | The tide is turning
• It wasn't so long ago that most hotelier hadn't even heard of Airbnb. The company was founded in 2008, and didn't open its first overseas office until 2011. But even when the name was being mentioned at industry gatherings, many in our sector were either ignorant of what Airbnb was, or dismissive of the potential it had for disruption.
"It's not a threat to us," was a line regularly trotted out by hotel company CEOs, to the incredulity of many industry watchers.
Fast forward to 2017, and rather than adopting an adversarial approach, Airbnb is actively courting hotels, particularly in the boutique and lifestyle hotel sector.
Since November last year, it has signed up 15,000 boutique hotels who are now listing inventory on the site, tempted by the volume of traffic it enjoys and the low commission rates when compared with regular OTAs. Like any services it has its pros and cons, but the phoney propaganda 'us v them' war is surely now over, with large numbers of hoteliers signing up to Airbnb.
Look out for an entertaining debate on the pros and cons of listing on Airbnb at the 2018 Boutique and Lifestyle Hotel Summit - agenda coming soon!
