• CitizenM's move in to the Asian market, with the launch of its latest property in Taipei, is a significant milestone for an innovative company which was founded "as an observation".
The company was a reaction to its founders noticing that "the world has seen the evolution of a new type of traveller".
CitizenM's website says: "These modern individuals are explorers, trekkers, professionals and shoppers. They are independent, share a respect for different cultures and are young at heart. You might be one of them. If so congratulations: you are what we call a Mobile Citizen of the World. You're so important to us that we named our hotel after you."
The intriguing thing about CitizenM is that it wasn't dreamt up as the ego trip of a visionary, it's also not a knee-jerk brand launched in response to a competitor's product. The concept, and the resulting properties, have been developed to cater for an existing but underserved user group that the company founders felt sure would appreciate the product.
So far, they certainly seem to have got it right. Its 10 European, one American, and now one Asian property share the same goal of "luxury for less", and the brand's global growth looks set to continue.
