| | | | Hybrids raise the bar
• The rise of the hybrid hotel model shows no signs of slowing, with A&O's latest property - its first in Italy - being typical of the new wave of hotels in this sector. Gone are the functional, slightly institutional-feeling properties of the past, companies such as A&O and Meininger are now big on design, with bright, fresh spaces for communal activities and socialising.
For its new Venice hotel, A&O has really gone to town - designed by Italian architect Sandro Bisà, the property has an arcade passageway in the entrance area, an exterior façade consisting of black glass tiles, and an expansive inner courtyard with trees measuring up to 14 metres in height.
But as well as offering good design, the new wave of hybrid hotels are extremely efficient - the variety of rooms sizes and configurations they can offer makes converting existing buildings an easier and less costly job. The Venice property has 309 rooms with a focus on double and family rooms, and houses a total of 986 beds. This is a model which we are going to see a lot more of as the hostel and group travel market continues to reinvent itself.
