Q&A with Alizza Hetherington
Recently awarded as the 2016 Victorian Amateur Player of the Year (Female)

Firstly congratulations on the award. 2016 was obviously a huge year for you. You won the Victorian Girls Amateur and Victorian Women's Amateur as well as playing on both the girls and womens State teams. What was that like?
It was pretty exciting. I'd been down here [in Melbourne] a year or two already and I'd been putting in a lot of practise and it was finally all starting to pay off so I was definitely excited and I'm grateful to have been in those situations.

You moved to Melbourne from Darwin in 2014. Firstly why did you move? and how are you enjoying living in Melbourne and playing your golf at Royal Melbourne GC?
The main reason for the move was because my older brother Josh wanted to come down to pursue his golf. He was the really passionate one, I kind of just tagged along, and he got into Royal Melbourne through his host family because they were members at Royal. Then they invited me to the golf club and I met the Captain there, Gina, who welcomed me in and I joined the Pennant team. Royal is awesome. The practise facilities are top notch and all the members are really welcoming so I've obviously been loving it there!

Fast forward to 2017, you tee it up at the Oates Vic Open and ISPS Hands Women's Australian Open plus represent Australia at the Queen Sirikit Cup. That must be surreal at your age?
It was pretty awesome. I think the Australian Open week was probably the highlight. I had square in the first round and then struggled with a 6-over in the second and missed the cut but the experience was awesome. I got to go in the players lounge with all my idols like Nelly Korda, Ariya Jutanugarn, Minjee Lee. It was pretty incredible so that's been the highlight of my year so far.

With that said, who are your main role models in golf?
Yeah, I think Minjee Lee for me. She is pretty amazing. Not just her ability to hit shots and swing the club but she's really athletic and has a hard work ethic so I look up to her. And I also really like Curtis Luck. He's kind of shot up from no where and started winning tournaments and now playing over in America. It's pretty amazing. I remember he played the Australian Master of the Amateurs not long ago at Royal and he was teaching me how to hit bunker shots with Josh because him and Josh are mates, which was pretty cool. So I definitely look up to him.

Speaking of the Australian Master of the Amateurs, you've been invited to play as the first female in the event next year.
I think I got a bit lucky there because I am a member at Royal and they have a spot for a member so I might've got lucky but I can't wait to play that event and compete against the best amateurs in the world.

You're in your final year of school at Hailbury. How has it been balancing year 12 with your golf?
It's a bit of a struggle but I've kind of lightened the load because I did one VCE subject last year so I only have four this year. They're not extremely hard but I've definitely been putting a lot of time into my studies, got to put school first.

What's next after school?
I don't want to have a gap year, I'm going to get stuck straight into university. I want to get into Monash and study business for 3 or 4 years and then hopefully I have enough time while I'm at uni to get into a good practise schedule and compete in loads of amateur events and see how I'm placing. That's my plan so far!
