Not so instant karma

 
• IHG's move to merge Kimpton's Karma Rewards loyalty program with its own raises an intriguing question. Logistically it makes perfect sense, and of course giving the tens of millions of IHG Rewards Club members extra perks if they stay at Kimpton properties is likely to be attractive to them.

But then there is the question of how many Kimpton Karma members are still actively engaged with the brand now it is a fully absorbed part of the IHG machine. Independent hotel brands can sometimes inspire almost fanatical loyalty, and Kimpton was certainly one such brand. It was one of the few organisations of its size to operate a successful rewards scheme and maintain its indie cred and loyal following.

I have a feeling that an awful lot of those people will have voted with their feet when IHG bought Kimpton in late 2014 - the brand they loved and that they so strongly identified with probably doesn't sit comfortably in their perception alongside Holiday Inn. So a nice little extra for IHG loyalty members but it will be interesting to see how many Kimpton Karma members will be heading in the other direction seeking rewards.
