| | | | Optimism in the air
• An interesting first few sessions at the Deloitte European Hotel Investment Conference this morning have all had a common thread running through them - one of optimism, both for the general economy but particularly for the European hotel sector.
Deloitte's Andreas Scriven kicked things off by revealing that European hotel transaction volume was up by six per cent in H1 2017. He also offered a staggering statistic about the potential business from the Chinese market - already a key demographic for many hotels - currently just four per cent of Chinese citizens own a passport.
Further positivity - tempered with no small amount of dry humour - was provided by Capital Economics' Roger Bootle, who provided an interesting counterpoint to the prevailing mood about the economic fall-out from Brexit.
Bootle - who is pro-Brexit - said that not reaching a trade deal with the EU is probably the best outcome for the UK and said he was far more worried about the effect on the economy of a potential Labour government than that of Brexit.
Perhaps the most startling stat about the European market came from STR's Robin Rossmann who said that occupancy and ADR growth across Europe are both well ahead of 2008 levels - the previous industry peak - despite various headwinds including the financial crisis, terror attacks, and the effect of Airbnb and its ilk.
