Ownership issues

•  It's fascinating to see that Hotels. com is trialling a scheme to allow guests to check in and out, and access their rooms using a mobile device.

The pilot of the mobile key application will initially be trialled at three CABINN branded properties in Denmark, with the intention to roll out more widely to interested hotel partners over the next few years.

With phones increasingly used for cashless payments and other transactions, this would appear to be the way forward for hotels, but the fact that it could be driven by an OTA rather than individual properties will rings alarm bells in some quarters. The issue of 'ownership' of the guest becomes more complicated when the check-in and access processes are facilitated by a third party. Definitely one to keep an eye on!

• The entry period for the 2018 Boutique Hotel Guest experience Awards (The BoHos) is now open and runs until January 19th. We expect to have a bumper entry this year after getting off to such a great start when we launched the BoHos this time last year.

The BoHos reward the boutique, lifestyle and hybrid hotels who provide the very best in guest experiences. The BoHos are unique in that the winners are decided, not by judges, but by the hotels' guests, using a combination of aggregated verified guest feedback from review sites and booking engines worldwide, and direct guest feedback via questionnaires. Each have a 50 per cent weighting in a hotel's overall score to give a true picture of the guest experience provided.

Once entries for the 2018 awards have been finalised (the entry period closes on January 19th), a three-month period of data collection will commence, where each property's verified online reviews and direct feedback from guests will be collected and handed over to impartial academics at Glion Institute of Higher Education, who will then independently collate, assess and analyse the data, and decide upon the results.

The 2018 BoHos will be presented at a gala ceremony in London on May 21, on the first evening of the 2018 Boutique and Lifestyle Hotel Summit. Click here to enter the awards and here to buy tickets for the Summit and the BoHos ceremony.
