Kalz and Park thunder home at 13th Beach

Despite a nervous night and the weight of expectation, neither Hannah Park or Jackson Kalz surrendered their 54-hole leads at 13th Beach on their way to winning the 2017 Junior Vic Open.

The winning duo were threatened early in the final round by their playing partners but none of the chasing pack could reel in Kalz or Park in supremely low-scoring conditions on the final day. Read more...

Q&A with Stephanie Bunque and Dave Micheluzzi
2017 Vic Amateur Champions

Steph, 2017 Vic Amateur champion, how does that sound?
It sounds pretty good to me! Coming runner-up two years ago was a bit deflating at the time, but now going one better this year is very rewarding, it's a good feeling.

And you've completed the double, having won the Port Phillip on Saturday in a playoff. You must be red hot right now?
My game's coming along nicely. I'm starting to find some form which is nice. I haven't really found anything in recent times but I've had a couple good results coming into summer so it'll be nice to get straight back into it in January.

You had a strong start in the morning, talk us through how the afternoon played out?
The morning was pretty solid, I think I was about 3 or 4 under which was nice. After lunch the wind really picked up and I sort of struggled a bit off the tee, trying to find the fairway, competing against a strong head breeze but I just continued to play my own game and not worry so much about what Grace was doing.

I didn't want to get too carried away or think about the score too much. So even though the wind got up and the conditions got a bit iffy at times, I felt good at where I was every spot in the match.

What does this victory do for your confidence going into 2018?
It's huge. Especially doing the double with the stroke play and then the match play. It's good to know I can handle any format. It's good to find this form and have the confidence coming into the break.

Dave, 2017 Vic Amateur champion, how does that sound?
Sounds pretty good! It hasn't quite sunk in yet but yeah, just over the moon. It's pretty hard to win a tournament and I've just ticked one off the list for this year and hopefully I'll go into next year and win more.

It was a pretty convincing win over Zach Murray, you were obviously hitting the ball really well today...
I probably hit it the best I've hit it all week and also putted the best I have all week. It all kind of clicked which was great. I played 5-under, bogey-free, this morning and I think I was 2-under through ten holes. It's probably some of the best golf I've ever played.

You made a post on social media after the Port Phillip where you lost in a playoff. You mentioned something along the lines of 'you either win or you learn.' Give us some insight into that?
Conor McGregor's coach wrote a book called 'win or learn'. I don't read that much but I took that to heart. You do, you either win or you learn - you don't lose because you're not really losing anything.

You've had a great year. You must be rapt to finish on this high note?
Last tournament of the year - very very happy with the last three weeks, especially this week. Hopefully 2018 can be a lot better!
