Good week, bad week

• A quick round up of the ups and downs of the last week in hospitality....

Good week

• UK agents: The UK regained its place as the biggest European hotel transaction market in 2017, knocking Germany off the top spot, which it took in 2016. According to hotel consultancy HVS Hodges Ward Elliott. UK transaction volumes reached €5.4bn (£4.8bn) in 2017, up from €3.6bn (£3.2bn) in 2016.

• Women in hospitality
In the week we celebrated International Women's Day, Preferred Hotels & Resorts made not one but three female executive appointments. CEO Lindsey Ueberroth said: "We have made the strategic decision to harness the skillset of experts in key functional areas outside of our family, which will allow us to augment our existing strengths and better position our company on a global scale. I am very proud to have three dynamic, talented women take over vital leadership roles within the company."

Bad week

• Technophobes

If you're one of those people who find home technology like Amazon Echo intrusive, particularly with the news that it has started randomly laughing at homeowners, then it's a bad week for you, as it's now entering the hotel workplace. IDeaS' G3 RMS voice-interaction technology will allow businesses to access real-time data and performance metrics through smart speaker devices. In hospitality, voice interaction will give hoteliers at all levels instant access to a range of performance data such as occupancy, room rates, competitor rates, forecasts, revenue details and more.

• TripAdvisor's relegation zone
Housekeepers look away now. The Sun newspaper in the UK has rounded up the worst ranked hotels on TripAdvisor, and it makes pretty gruesome reading. I won't name any of the establishments pilloried in the article, but some of the comments are pretty memorable. For example: "As soon as you walk in you're hit by a smell that smells like a mixture between guinea pig faeces and fish." Or: "Dirty is an understatement, the bins outside the hotel looked more inviting."
