• The EDITION brand's decision to phase out all single-use plastics in its properties by Q1 2019 is great news, if perhaps a little tardy.
The hospitality sector - which is responsible for creating vast amounts of single use plastics (think straws, coffee pods, shampoo bottles etc) - has been relatively slow to act over the issue, but public opinion on this particular cause has been mobilised so quickly by the shocking images of huge rafts of plastic waste in the ocean and the associated loss of wildlife, that if hoteliers don't act quickly, they will be hit hard in the bottom line by guests who will desert them for properties they feel are doing their bit.
EDITION is a strong brand and it is very good at working with influencers, so its Stay Plastic Free campaign is likely to gain momentum quickly - the fact that it is working with other hoteliers to raise awareness and help them cut plastic use too is a real positive. It's an ambitious programme and one that I hope is hugely successful.
