Deep soul

• Listening to Todd Reppert talking about Standard International's move in to Europe, once couldn't help but be struck by the drive and the passion has for the brand. As Standard prepares to open in London - in the converted former Camden Town Hall in King's Cross - it became apparent that Reppert believes the lifestyle hotel space is evolving rapidly and that merely having attractively designed spaces is not enough.

Reppert peppers his conversation with words such as authenticity, soul, and feeling. He hopes that rather than merely having a visual similarity, that all the brand's hotels will give guests the same feeling. The London hotel is a big, ambitious project, and it will be fascinating to see how the Standard brand translates to Europe when it opens.

• One brand which has travelled in the other direction recently, making its US debut, is The Hoxton. Exciting news surrounding its parent company Ennismore has emerged this week, in the form of a potential $1 billion investment from telecoms tycoon Sunil Mittal. This could potentially see a significant increase in momentum in The Hoxton's growth plans, as well as that of NoCo, Ennismore's new budget flag, which recently announced its first site in London.
