• The trend for retailers to move in to hotel management is becoming a truly international theme.
In the US we have seen Shinola and Urban Outfitters open hotels, but it is homewares giant West Elm that is really setting the pace with seven properties open or in the pipeline. In Japan, Muji is getting in on the action and in the UK we have recently seen Laura Ashley Hotels & Resorts appoint former Bespoke Hotels International managing director Nick Turner to oversee its expansion.
And now in Korea we have Shinsegae Chosun Hotel moving in to the boutique hotel space with its Seoul opening. The company is the hospitality arm of Shinsegae, a South Korean retail franchise, whose flagship store in Centum City, Busan, is the world's largest department store. It operates the Westin Chosun hotels in Seoul and Busan, along with Four Points by Sheraton in the capital but the new hotel - called L'Escape - is its first independently branded property. It has been given a decadent Parisian style by internationally renowned designer Jacques Garcia and is certainly a radical departure for the company.
It will be fascinating to see which is the next retailer to throw its hat in to the hospitality ring.
