• If you were in any doubt that the hotel sector is going to be as affected by the exponential acceleration of technology as any other industry, then a quick chat with Nordic Choice Hotels' head of business Christian Lundén will quickly disabuse you of that notion.
Lundén recently spoke with ALICE CEO Alex Shashou for BHN, and the topics he revealed the company is investigating was pretty astonishing. It included blockchain technology for distribution (as featured on BHN here), nanotechnology in food production, and even space travel. In fact Lundén has held talks with NASA "to find out how our popular world of hospitality can be a really big player in space".
Perhaps the key phrase to come out of the interview was: "I'm not interested in what our competitors are doing - because if they are doing it then we are already too late. I'm more interested in how companies like Netflix, Apple, Tesla, and others outside our industry are crafting totally new experiences or expectations for guests."
The next decade is likely to see massive changes in the technology that is available to hoteliers, and what seems fantastic now will become commonplace at dizzying speed. Lundén is undoubtedly going to be at the forefront of those changes.
