• There's a power play afoot in London's hotel scene, with the Barclay brothers close to securing the leasehold of the Beaumont hotel for somewhere in the region of £130 million.

The property is owned by the Duke of Westminster's Grosvenor Estate, and is the first hotel venture for star restaurateurs Christopher Corbin and Jeremy King - the duo behind The Wolseley, The Delaunay and Brasserie Zedel.

The Beaumont was King's baby - he conceptualised a back story for the property, based around a fictional New York character named Jimmy Beaumont who escaped Prohibition and came to find his fortune in London around 1920. The hotel was designed with Jimmy's influence in mind, and this was done so successfully that on opening, the Beaumont immediately felt like a firmly established property, an old favourite rather than a brash newcomer.

But its trading figures have reportedly not matched its undoubted style, moving Grosvenor Estates to alter its arrangement with Corbin & King to a management contract while it finds a buyer for the leasehold.

Given that the Barclays, who own The Ritz and the Telegraph newspaper and are firmly in pole position, have their own hospitality arm - the Ellerman Hotel Company - it would seem likely The Beaumont's founders will soon be ousted. Whether the experience will deter them from further hotel ventures remains to be seen, but they undoubtedly brought a huge amount of creativity to the beautifully executed Beaumont.
