• The Shoreditch area of London has seen a huge influx of hotel rooms over the last five years, the majority of them in the boutique and lifestyle space. The Curtain, which changed hands this week, was one of the new entrants, alongside The Ace, The Boundary, Nobu, M by MontcalmThe Courthouse, CitizenM and more.
There are still several new hotels to come to the area too, notably from Mama Shelter and Blakes. Inevitably, all this activity has seen this geographically tiny, yet very desirable, area become incredibly competitive.
The sale of The Curtain to multi-sector tycoons the Reuben brothers could confirm the emergence of a trend in the area for owners to sell a couple of years after opening. Starwood Capital held on the The Ace for two years before selling it on for £150 million, and now Michael Achenbaum of the Gansevoort Hotel Group has done something similar.
A subsidiary of Achenbaum's outfit, alongside co-developer Jeffrey Levine, will continue to manage The Curtain however, and it will be interesting to see how it fares in the face of renewed competition.
