Making connections

• The launch of the SALT brand by the LUX Collection boss Paul Jones is a good example of how boutique hotels can use their connections with the local neighbourhood to compete with Airbnb in providing authentic neighbourhood experiences and activities.

Airbnb's Experiences programme is growing fast, and many hoteliers are beginning to realise they need to up their game to stay relevant. SALT's offer, beginning in Mauritius before moving on to other properties across the Indian Ocean, Asia, Africa and the Middle East, starts with the design of the hotel which will take inspiration from "local colour, shape and motif, to infuse the vitality of local culture into the interiors and give guests a true sense of place".

But it is the interaction that guests will experience when staying at a SALT hotel that will make their memories. Each guest will be equipped with the tools to get off the beaten path and behind the scenes. A bespoke guidebook written and photographed by locals, illustrated maps, a local SIM card and a choice of transport to explore independently - bicycles or cool convertibles.

Jones says his guests want to engage with where they stay and that SALT can "help facilitate these connections and create meaningful experiences for our guests and the communities in which we operate. The possibilities for contribution and collaboration are endless, and I think this is just the beginning of something very special indeed."

I think he is on the right track, and if you are not allowing your guests to experience the best your area has to offer you are missing a trick.
