• An interesting twist in India this week, as THE Park Hotels takes over the management of The Denmark Tavern in Serampore.
THE Park Hotels is run by Priya Paul, described as the "first lady of boutique hotels" in India. The company was founded by her father Surrendra Park and is now known for its use of cutting edge design and contemporary outlook. Its Zone by the Park brand is a good example, with its new-build properties aiming to "establish a connection between the traveller and the local culture by creating a contemporary collage of the country and its traditions".
The Denmark Tavern, on the other hand, just happens to be the oldest hotel in India. It was originally established in 1786 and was a meeting place for traders, clergy and travellers exploring Bengal.
Having been comprehensively renovated, Paul says the hotel, which is owned by the West Bengal Government, will "soon be buzzing with guests enjoying a quiet break on the banks of Hooghly and the sights and sounds of old-world Serampore and beyond".
