Hybrids getting hotter

• The hostel/hotel/hybrid market is heating up again, bringing with it serious investment and a degree of uncertainty over terminology.

Generator Hostels, as it was known when it was sold to Queensgate Investments for €450 million in March last year, has recently dropped the word Hostels from its name and is now called simply Generator.

"If we had to call ourselves Generator Hotels, that's a complete misrepresentation," says Generator chief marketing officer Jason Rieff. "The same way as if we had to call ourselves Generator Hostels. Although that's something that historically has been our name, it's also not really a full representation of who we are."

The London-based brand offers a mix of hotel rooms and dorms in its properties, and recently opened its first outpost in the Americas, in Miami.

Moving in the other direction, and with a future-proof name that doesn't pigeonhole it, is Panama-based Selina. With a similar room mix to Generator, it currently operates in Latin American hot spots and has a very ambitious plan to expand to 54,000 beds (hybrid brands use beds rather than keys as an indicator of size) worldwide by 2020. Europe and the US are its main targets, and with WeWork founder Adam Neumann on its board and a $95 million funding round war chest to play with, we expect to see Selina making waves in this sector very soon.
