| | | | Season's greetings
• The sale of Belmond to luxury goods conglomerate LVMH marks the start of a new chapter for the hotel group, which last made the headlines for its, in my opinion, ill-advised change of name from Orient-Express Hotels in 2014.
Ditching an iconic brand name which is known far and wide, indeed way beyond its own industry, for a new and unknown company name, and spending $15 million in the process struck many industry observers, myself included, as an odd move.
In its defence, Belmond has a string of hotels which are iconic brands in their own right - Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons in Oxfordshire, Hotel Cipriani in Venice, and Reid's Palace in Madeira, to name a few.
And now these properties join Bvlgari Hotels and Cheval Blanc in the hospitality division of the Paris-based luxury goods giant. I hope they continue to set the benchmark for luxury hospitality.
This is the last BHN newsletter of 2018. I'd like to wish all our readers a wonderful festive period and a happy new year. We'll be back with our next newsletter on January 7 2019.
