• An entertaining night in Soho last night at Verb Brands' luxury hospitality event resulted in some interesting points being raised about hotels' use of social media, blogs and PR.
Daisy Bird of Bird Travel PR highlighted the great opportunity that small hotels have to form direct relationships with potential brand advocates through digital channels, but warned that blogs and websites are "hungry beasts that need feeding" with copy and images.
She also stressed the importance of working with experienced journalists and copywriters to produce quality copy, rather than "churning" and urged hotels not to completely turn their back on traditional media in favour of bloggers, or "influencers" as they now seem to be called.
All the panellists agreed that it is very important to do a lot of research on "influencers" (I can't seem to stop using the speech marks for this slightly absurd term) who want to stay at your property, as they may be horribly misaligned with your brand values and target guests.
Verb Brands' Chris Donnelly spoke of a recent poll which revealed "influencer" was right at the top of a list of desired careers for young people, which prompted a call to hoteliers to really make sure they are distinguishing between bona fide travel bloggers and writers, and "people who just want to get free stuff all the time".
Do your homework, folks.
