• Lots of F&B related stories in the news this week, with new restaurant openings, chef hires, and AA rosettes all making the headlines. It got me thinking how dramatically - and quickly - both the standard of hotel food in the UK, and the guest's expectation of it, have risen.
I can still vividly remember a time when dining in many hotels was something of a lottery. In some establishments it was a pleasant surprise to get a decent meal and the full Fawlty Towers experience was still a possibility!
Now, some of my favourite restaurants are in boutique hotels, and the properties that get it right are really creating a neighbourhood hub which creates a buzz that spreads far and wide via social media. We have so much excellent choice these days, it's easier to forget how far things have progressed.
• Attracting the Chinese guest has been at the forefront of UK hoteliers minds for several years now, and the changes made to visa rules in 2016, combined with the lower value of the pound, has seen a significant rise in the numbers of Chinese visitors.
The first three months of 2017 saw a 43 per cent increase in inbound visitors from China compared with the same period in 2016, according to travel analysts ForwardKeys.
Hotels and other companies keen to sell to this audience are finding innovative ways to do it, as witnessed by Visa China's sponsorship of London hotel wi-fi. Look out for increasingly sophisticated examples of this style of marketing in the months to come.
