• The ups and downs of the last seven days in hospitality.
Good week
The serviced apartment and extended stay sector This week saw the third annual Serviced Apartment Awards take place in London. Run by our sister publication Serviced Apartment News, the black tie gala event saw winners coming from around the world, and included a wide range of established and up-and-coming new operators. Click here to see video highlights from the event.
Hotels in staycation locations The trend for staycations in the UK has led to significant extensions to the busy seasons for some hotels. The Royal Hotel at Kirkby Lonsdale has reported its best ever year, with a 20% year-on-year increase in turnover and an 11% increase in room occupancy. General manager Damian Atkins said: "We have benefitted from the fact that visitors now come to Kirkby Lonsdale almost all year round. It used to be a definite Easter to October season, but more and more people seem to be choosing to explore the UK with short breaks now booming in popularity all year round."
Bad week
A right Royale Rumpus The operators of South Africa's Cape Royale Hotel are fighting a lawsuit to shut down the establishment. Last week‚ the High Court in Cape Town heard an application for leave to appeal against a judgment delivered by the court in February shutting down the Green Point hotel for contravening a municipal by-law. The administrator of the hotel body corporate‚ Simon Woolley of Noland Forensics‚ is suing the developer‚ Paschal Phelan‚ for contravening zoning regulations, claiming the hotel and restaurants are in direct contravention of the approved plans for the building in respect of fire safety.
• Partying too hard A man who won a hefty lawsuit following a car accident took his entire cash reward to a hotel in the Bronx to celebrate with a couple of new lady friends. Unfortunately for him, the $96,000 in cash was stolen when the women in question called their armed accomplices to come over and relieve the guest of his new found wealth.
