• There is a lot of talk about blockchain technology and how it has the potential to revolutionise numerous industries by replacing the intermediary function in a broad range of transactions. I have to admit to being something of a blockhead in that, after several explanations, I still don't clearly understand exactly how the process works.
But it isn't difficult to see the technology's potential applications. Middlemen in a range of scenarios are becoming worried, particularly bankers and solicitors. And you can now add OTAs to that list, because blockchain offers hospitality providers the opportunity to regain the direct connection with the end user and their data that is surrendered through the use of an OTA. Some travel companies, including TUI, are already building their own blockchains, while others are using the services of provider companies such as Winding Tree. In China, a blockchain provider was recently bidding to buy hotels - they can clearly see the potential synergies for the technology in the space.
It's a fascinating area, and one which is only going to grow. DWF's Axel von Goldbeck gives us a great insight in to the current state of play here - it's a thought-provoking read.
