Brexit is a very important issue, but another European battle is taking shape at entry points to Venice, where tourism officials have installed turnstiles to divert visitors along prescribed routes to blunt the crush of the crowds. Some Venetians took exception to the new access points, which they were also subject to, as an affront to their everyday lives.

In 2017, Barcelona made headlines for demonstrations at a tourism attraction and on the beaches, and Venice may be taking center stage this year. Officials in Capri are likewise mulling their own turnstile test. The whole thing may turn out to be a test of wills, as overtourism clashes with locals' sensibilities anew on the front lines of European tourism in summer 2018.
