| | | | | A guessing game
• I don't know about you but I have given up trying to predict which hospitality brand is next on Accor's shopping list. The French giant, under the leadership of CEO Sebastien Bazin, has been on an amazing run of acquisitions - either buying companies outright or, more typically, buying a significant shareholding.
In our boutique and lifestyle space over the last few years, Mama Shelter, 25hours, Mantis, Mantra, and Banyan Tree have all come under the Accor umbrella, along with the launch of the Jo & Joe brand.
But I have to admit I didn't see the SBE deal coming, although in hindsight it makes good sense. SBE owns the former Morgans brands, including Delano, Mondrian and Hudson, as well as its own SLS and Redbury flags. Accor's 50 per cent stake gives it a big boost in the luxury lifestyle space in key US cities such as Miami, Los Angeles or Las Vegas, and in other international destinations.
As Bazin described it: "'The new luxury' is all about exclusive experiences and incredible lifestyle concepts and SBE brands have the perfect know-how that will complete perfectly the AccorHotels portfolio."
Is that word "complete" a signal that the spending spree could be over for now?
