• Renovation is the dominant theme in the hotel news this week, with a variety of projects hitting the headlines demonstrating a broad range of scope and ambition.
In terms of scale, Pendry Hotels' Natirar Mansion project takes some beating. It is converting a grand, Tudor-style New Jersey mansion, formerly owned by the late King of Morocco and originally completed in 1912 as an estate home for heiress Kate Macy Ladd and husband Walter Ladd, into a 66-room and suite luxury hotel (Pendry Natirar), and a collection of private homes (Pendry Residences Natirar). Pretty spectacular provenance and an exciting project that we will watch with interest.
And with slightly humbler origins but no less impressive is the new Hotel Indigo Dundee, which is housed in a 200-year old former jute mill. One of the great strengths of the boutique and lifestyle sector is its ability to transform and breathe new life in to an enormous range of buildings and structures, from churches and warehouses to fire stations and even Napoleonic forts in the English Channel. It's rewarding to be part of an industry that can change the use of these beautiful old buildings and give them a new lease of life.
