The green clean

• When the issue of sustainability in hotels is discussed, it is usually in the context of energy-saving efficient buildings or cutting down food miles by using local produce in the F&B outlets.

What makes the headlines less frequently but is of equal, if not more, importance, is the fact that busy hotels are getting through huge amounts of chemicals and detergents to keep bedrooms at the cleanliness standards that guests demand, and to keep kitchens spotless and healthy.

So it's exciting to see Denmark's Brøchner Hotels open the first chemical-free property in Copenhagen - its new Herman K Hotel.

Brøchner Hotels has teamed up with Danish company ACT.Global, to coat all the rooms and suites at Hotel Herman K with ACT CleanCoat - an invisible and odourless coating that makes surfaces self-disinfectant, ensuring low-bacterial level, healthy indoor climate and cleaner air.

Instead of using traditional cleaning chemicals, ECA water, created by electrolysis of salt and water, is used to clean the rooms. The company has found in trials that this method actually results in lower bacteria levels than using traditional cleaning materials, as well as lower water consumption.

A green, clean step in the right direction.
