The Kimpton brand finally comes to London, in the shape of the former Hotel Russell, briefly the Principal London, and from October to be known as Kimpton Fitzroy London.
The 1898 property underwent a major renovation while in the ownership of Starwood Capital, and is a very impressive building inside and out, certainly a worthy choice for IHG to debut Kimpton in the UK. After a relatively slow start in rolling the brand out in Europe, the Kimpton brand is beginning to pick up a head of steam with Paris and Frankfurt deals already signed and several further properties in the discussion stage, in addition to further conversions from the Principal portfolio in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Manchester.
It will be fascinating to see if the European Kimpton properties are able to develop a distinct identity from their US counterparts. Founded in 1981 by Bill Kimpton in San Francisco, Kimpton, as one of the very first boutique hotel brands, has a uniquely American style - how it translates over the pond will be fun to watch.
