UK adds 140 new luxury hotels in the last two years

UK: Boutique hotels have made up a large proportion of the growth in UK luxury hotels over the last two years, says new research.

Event review: EquipHotel 2018

France: Boutique Hotel News travelled to Paris to attend the biennial EquipHotel trade show, which took place at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles.

Playing our part

• It's heartening to see that boutique hotels are playing a significant role in the growth of the UK's luxury (four-star and above) hotel market.

New research from property law firm Boodle Hatfield says that at least 140 new properties in the luxury space have been opened in the UK over the last two years, while the number of three-star and lower properties fell by 110 in the same period.

The research found that there has been particular growth in the independent boutique hotel market, "as affluent tourists seek more authentic local experiences rather than the predictability of major hotel chains". These hotels are often conversions of a local landmark building, or give guests access to local culture, for example through their food offerings. Quality rather than quantity would appear to be the way the market is heading, and boutique hotels are well poised to offer luxury and experiential stays to capitalise on this trend.

• Following our video interview with Heleri Rande, I'd like to add my own small tribute to Bob Puccini, the hotel restaurant visionary, who passed away last month. Bob was a constant traveller, always seeking out new ideas and people to inspire him, and I would often bump in to him at events all over the world. Bob was always a positive, encouraging and generous presence, with a smile on his face, and time for a chat over a coffee or a glass of merlot, depending on the time of day. He will be missed by many.
