Europe Weekend Review: Summer Travel Wilts in Heat + Norwegian Air's Waiting Game

July 14, 2018 View in browser

Editor's Note

Sunshine, or rather the lack of it, is one of the main reasons why millions of Northern Europeans head abroad every summer.

The problem for tour operators at the moment is that a heat wave in the UK and elsewhere is making people think twice about booking that two-week trip.

Of course, plenty of people have already booked — but the "lates" market (vacations booked close to departure) has the power to turn an average year into a good one.

In recent weeks, a number of financial analysts have warned that the good weather might hurt Thomas Cook and TUI Group, both of which have seen their share price fall.

Another factor is the World Cup. A peak audience of 26.5 million people watched England lose to Croatia in the semi-finals; that's 40 percent of the total population. Travel industry received wisdom suggests people don't want to book or go away when their national team is doing well.

With temperatures supposedly on their way down and the World Cup coming to an end, travel companies will be hoping consumer demand returns.

"Anybody telling me you should be limiting the number of brands, I think it's bullshit," said AccorHotels CEO Sebastien Bazin at Skift Forum Europe. We wouldn't be surprised to see him expand the hotel giant's portfolio of brands to at least 40, up from today's 32.

Booking Holdings Buys HotelsCombined as Kayak Expands Into Asia Pacific

Booking.com is Booking Holdings' favored child, but with the addition of HotelsCombined, it is apparent that the parent company still sees plenty of opportunity for its Kayak unit in metasearch worldwide. This deal will help Kayak expand in Asia Pacific, and will give HotelsCombined additional resources as well.

Analysts Are Puzzled Why Booking Holdings Acquired HotelsCombined

The deal surprised analysts, some of whom didn't see an obvious logic for it. Yet one thing is sure: Online hotel sales are a bit like an old-fashioned butter market. A big chunk of butter changes hands multiple times and everyone gets their hands greasy.
