• Savvy travellers have been booking hotel rooms through Airbnb for a while now, and the rentals giant is making a concerted effort to attract more boutique hotels to list inventory on its platform. In March this year it specifically singled out the major OTAs for charging commission rates which it said are "too high", while urging hoteliers to consider Airbnb as an alternative.

Australia's 8Hotels has always been an innovative company which plays the digital game very well - in 2013 it launched what it called the world's first "Instagram hotel" — inspired by the photo-sharing app. The 1888 hotel in Sydney features screens at the reception desk which display a constantly updated feed of photos uploaded with the #1888hotel hashtag, while guests can proceed to a specially designated "selfie space" and take a photo behind a gilt frame. Instagram users with more than 10,000 followers get a free night's stay, as does the guest who posts the most creative shot of the hotel each month.

So the tie up with Airbnb to offer the new Little Albion guest house, either room by room, or in its entirety is another canny move by the company. Founder and CEO Paul Fischmann says: "There is a clear evolution in the consumer journey on what both corporate and leisure guests genuinely want from their home away from home, being the luxury and comfort of a hotel teamed with the ease and familiarity of an Airbnb".

It's a coup for both parties, and will generate lots of media buzz for Airbnb as it increases its share of the boutique hotel distribution space.
